Family activities and evening theatre and song

are the highlights of this weekend’s Festival events.

And during the day there are plenty of exhibitions to see.

 

Saturday 16 July

 

All Nations Centre Special Family Fun Event. 1-5pm. Barbecue Party, performances by choirs and James Kane Nursery and Homework Club children, drama from Truth in Action, activities for children including Bouncy Castle. All Nations Centre, Tyers Terrace.

 

Reminder to Members and Guests of Members of: Vauxhall Gardens Community Centre. Open Evening. 5-9pm. Latin American theatre from Neuvo Generacion. Portuguese children's dance. Paris Rock Club rock and roll East Coast Swing dance demo and fun workshop class. Latin and Portuguese music. 21st Century Vixens comedy. 100 Vauxhall Walk.

 

‘A Fiver’s Worth of Courage’. Elizabeth Fry: Britain’s most bankable heroine. 7pm. You know her face (on the £5 note), but do you know her extraordinary story? Play about the life and work of the prison reformer. Kate Willoughby Productions. Lambeth Mission, 3-5 Lambeth Rd (corner Lambeth Walk). Recommended by Sean Creighton, Riverside Festival co-ordinator. ‘One scene in particular will lift you from your pews’.

 

Sunday 17 July

 

Harleyford Road Garden Association Festival Day. 12.30-5pm. Visit the gardens and enjoy live music, tea and cakes. Children's play area and wildlife pond.  Mosaic workshop for children. Music performances by Pimlico School pupils. Harleyford Road Community Garden, Harleyford Rd.

 

The Killer Soprano. Rosemary Ashe. 6.30pm for 7pm. The songs of Noel Coward, Cole Porter, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Offenbach and even Dusty Springfield and Dolly Parton. £20 inc. refreshments provided by Amici Bar & Restaurant. To book tickets ring Kennington Association:  020 7793 0268

 

Both Days

 

The Do in the Loo Three. 12noon-3pm. Come and see the plans to turn the Grade ll listed Victorian gentlemen¹s toilets lavatory at Kennington Cross (Kennington Rd/Lane junction) into an arts and heritage exhibition and events venue


Staged. 2-6pm. Exhibition using video, 16mm film, drawing and installation using elements from theatre and circus as a device to challenge and trick the viewer. Danielle Arnaud contemporary art, 123 Kennington Rd.

 

Alan Kitching et al:  Letterpress prints and other artworks. 5-7pm. Exhibition of work by world-renowned typographer and printmaker, plus other items by other artists. Cleaver Street Gallery, 19 Cleaver St.

 

Cloud & Vision – William Blake in Lambeth. 10.30am-5pm. Contemporary art exhibition about William Blake’s (poet and artist) Lambeth years (1790-1800). Museum of Garden History, Lambeth Palace Rd.

 

The YHA at 75. 11am-10pm. Photographic exhibition about the 75 years of the Youth Hostel Association’s encouragement of walking, rambling and cycling. The Camera Club, 16 Bowden Street.

 

Carl Michael von Hausswolff . 12 - 6pm. Exhibition of photography, film, sound and light to show the mystique of remote and abandoned habitations. Beaconsfield Galley, 22 Newport St

Do you have teenagers and young adults still living at home. Then next week sees several events particularly aimed at people in this age group. And several are open to adults of all ages.

 FESTIVAL NEWS SNIPPETS

 

Jazz at the Bonnington. A full house swung last night at Bonnington Centre to the sounds of the Nick Rixen Quartet.

The 21st Vixens Comedy Nights at the Dog House. If you missed the first three performances you can see this excellent comedy quartet at the Vauxhall Gdns Community Centre Open Evening this Saturday. And they are performing again at the pub on Wednesday 20 and Thursday 21 starting at 9.30pm. Not to be missed.

Sure Start Summer Gardening Project at Vauxhall City Farm. The trips out have been very popular. The Farm staff have lots of good ideas for next year.

Circuit Training. Despite the hot weather Dan Stilwell had an enthusiastic group for the circuit training at Archbishop Sumner School yesterday. He will be taking another session there again at 6pm on Thursday 21 July.
