NEWS

Shamus Leonard/span>.. The funeral took place this morning of Shamus Leonard of Newquay House in Sancroft Rd at the Lambeth Cemetary in Blackshaw Rd. Angus Aagaard, of St Anslem’s Church, is a very gifted officiate, welding the shared values of Shamus and Christianity together, speaking movingly on behalf of  the family and with humour, and asking those present to say a word each that summed up what they thought of Shamus. A celebration and a mourning. After the singing of ‘Jerusalem’, Angus ended with a Shamus type piece of comedy before the burial. The family and friends then gathered for a drink and food at the Duchy, opposite where Shamus lived and where he had been a good customer.  Shamus had been one of RCDT’s emergency keyholder for 20 Newburn St.

Vauxhall Supplementary Planning Document/span>.. About 35-40 people attended the two workshops organised by Building Design Partnership on 17 April at Roots & Shoots about the ideas emerging for the Council’s Vauxhall Supplementary Development Plan. Ideas included ensuring that building development is against the railway viaduct not on the river, and if there is riverside development it should be low in height, and opening up railway arches to enable a view from Spring Gardens. The six week statutory consultation period will start in June. The Council hopes to approve the final document in October.

George & Dragon At Auction/span>. Having obtained planning permission to convert the former pub at 16 Vauxhall St into flats, the owner put the George & Dragon up for auction through Barnard Marcus on 17 April with a guide price of £1.35m. If it does not sell, then this could make an ideal development for a group of people who want to live as neighbours through co-ownership or co-housing. Details can be seen on www.barnardmarcusauctions.co.uk.

Lambeth Civic Awards/span>.. Local resident John Roberts, the police link member for Lambeth on the Metropolitan Police Authority, has been awarded the Lord Scarman civic award for his work in promoting equality in Lambeth. Oval resident, and former Councillor and Mayor, Claudette Hewitt has been awarded a Lambeth Civil Award for her work on behalf of the community. I am particularly pleased that Lloyd Leon, with whom I worked closely from 1984-9, has been given an award for his work in the community especially in the Community/Police Consultative Group for Lambeth.

Moj of the Antarctic: An African Odyssey. Following a successful run in March 2007, Moj of the Antarctic returns to Oval House Theatre for one week only to launch the production’s British Council-sponsored Tour of Southern Africa in June/July 2008. Moj of the Antarctic is inspired by the wonderful true life story of Ellen Craft, a 19th century African-American slave woman who escaped to freedom by disguising herself as a white man.  Ellen’s amazing story of race and gender cross-dressing is one of the forgotten gem’s of Black history, and the history of drag! Moj of the Antarctic extends Ellen’s amazing biography into a flight of theatrical fantasy where upon arrival in Victorian London, she finds work as a sailor on a whaling ship bound for the Southern Seas. Life on the ship is tough and even stranger is the men’s obsession with Black face minstrelsy.  Eventually the ship arrives in Antarctic waters ripe for gruesome whaling, and Moj becomes the first Black woman to step foot on Antarctica. This innovative total theatre piece incorporates video, text, dance, music, storytelling, song and stunning original photography created for the piece on location in Antarctica by visual artist Del LaGrace Volcano. Special Offer: £15.00 Meal Deal includes ticket to the show, a drink and a meal from our Caribbean café. Please call the box office for further information. Tickets: £12/£6 concessions. LONDON ELECTIONS 2008

1 May – dancing round the Maypole, the Workers’ Celebration started as part of campaign for the 8 hour day, and this year the London Mayor and Assembly Elections. The turnout for the two previous elections was low. This year’s could get even lower as more and more people find themselves unable to vote for the two major candidates and do not see the point of voting for the others. While abstaining from voting can be a political act it is usually interpreted as voter apathy. Every vote, even spoilt papers, counts in giving messages to the winning politicians. With all the talk of Britishness, one of its strongest features was the long struggle fight to extend democracy and obtain the vote. So exercising one’s vote is important. There are 9 candidates for Mayor. Their manifestos can be seen on the London Elects website: www.londonelects.org.uk/candidates/ls_candidates.aspx

In the Greater London Assembly elections there are 9 candidates for Lambeth & Southwark:o:p>

SShane Collins, Green Party

Jamsijn De Boo, Animals Count

Shirley Houghton, Conservative Partyo:p>

Daniel Lambert, the Socialist Party

GGeoffrey Macharia, Christian Peoples Alliance/st1:place> and Christian Party

CCaroline Pidgeon, Liberal Party

Janus Polenceus, English Democrats

Valerie Shawcross, The Labour Party

Jens st1:place w:st="on">Winton, UK Independence Party

Katt Young, Left List

Jamsijn De Boo, Animals Count has provided the following executive summary of Animal Count’s policies.

With over eight million inhabitants, , London is one of the largest cities in Western Europe, and has the largest population of companion animals within the UK. For over 3.5 million London households, companion animals are virtually part of the family, yet many struggle with the costs of veterinary care. Millions of voters consider the poor treatment of farm animals and animal experimentation to be important issues, which the government tries to ignore. Habitat destruction, through human encroachment, environmental fragmentation, pollution and global warming, results in a struggle for survival, for many wild animals within greater London. We believe that London should take the lead on animal protection within the UK, and indeed, worldwide. Animals Count’s main aims for the 2008 London elections include:

o   Establishing a basic animal health care system comparable to the NHS, including the provision of subsidised veterinary treatment and emergency care

o   Providing healthy food within schools, hospitals, care homes, and council premises, by promoting plant-based diets and banning products from intensively farmed animals

o   Preservation and expansion of parks and green corridors, facilitating green recreation and wildlife protection

Additional aims include:

o   Developing an Animal Protection Unit within the London Assembly ‘Policy and Partnerships’ Directorate, which would be responsible for policy, research and animal welfare education, at all levels

o   Strengthening the current Mayor’s Animal Welfare Framework policies, and expediting their implementation

o   Introducing Animal Protection (inspection) Officers within each London Borough

o   Cracking down on dog fighting and related offences

o   Encouraging social housing corporations and private owners to allow pets within rental properties

o   A comprehensive strategy for implementing best welfare standards within London city farms

o   A freeze on the granting of animal research licenses within London laboratories; critical scrutiny of the costs and benefits of existing animal research

o   Making London a leader for state-of-the-art non-animal research methods

o   Expansion of London

Animal Counts is holding an event in n Kennington Park

Valerie e Shawcross, Labour, says:

Kennington and Vauxhall are attractive characterful communities which face special challenges being on the front line of development, commercial and traffic pressures in London. It's also an area where issues of safety and security are paramount in the minds of many older people and parents with young families.

My pledges for Kennington and Vauxhall are to:

  •  Press for even more Police on the streets to ensure that our communities and estates feel protected and that drug dealing is beaten back
  • Ensure that the Mayor's new Youth Offer funding reaches the community, voluntary and church led projects that really bring good activities and sports into young people's lives
  • Press for continued improvements on the Northern Line to increase its capacity and press for additional bus services in areas of chronic overcrowding on the buses and tubes.
  • Fight to ensure the installation of the Cross River Tram scheme (as I did in Croydon as Council Leader) to make sure that our growing population has safe, fast and environmentally friendly means of getting to jobs and training in London.
  • Protect and enhance our scarce public spaces, parks such as Jubilee Gardens and our tree-lined streets!
  • Support plans for subsidies to public buildings and homes to ensure greater energy efficiency - reducing electric bills in our older building s and reducing our production of carbon dioxide - tackling climate change.
  • Fight against inappropriate and over bearing developers which don't enhance the character of the area. - such as the Oval Cricket ground hotel plans.
